Social and Cultural Awakening through Hip Hop

Description: Racial trauma, an ongoing consequence of historical trauma, has deleterious effects on the well-being of Africana communities, which calls for a social reform movement. There is no better-suited medium for such a movement than Hip Hop as its roots are born out of adversity and trauma. Hip Hop music, representing a potential shift in the ideological and ideational dynamics of the African American community insofar as it signaled an intergenerational movement around crafting solutions that were artistic, organizational, and institutional.

Financial Literacy: Cash Rules Everything Around Me CREAM get the money dollar dollar bill y'all

We will experience fractions and percentages at the heart of financial literacy through Hip Hop records, Injera, and Kente cloth.

Historically Black Colleges; Your Pathway to Success

Description: Students and participants will learn about the process a student can follow to transfer with 30 or more transferable units to the current 39 partner Historically Black College and Universities (HBCU). Students may transfer from any of the 114 California Community Colleges. Students following the California Community College Transfer Guarantee to HBCU’s Pathway will ensure the acceptance of transferable units from any Community College. Topics to be covered include the history of HBCUs, cost comparison, information regarding priority housing, in-state tuition for select schools, and scholarship opportunities available to California Community College transfer students. This is an interactive workshop that includes testimony from students who have successfully transferred to one of the 39 HBCU partner institutions. Students will learn about how attending a partner HBCU can be a life transformational experience.

Defund the Police on Campus - Transforming Public Safety and Caring  for Student Needs

Description: This presentation will share the campus and community organizing work of Black Minds Matter @ Peralta (BMMP) to replace the County Sheriff's on campus with unarmed community-oriented Black-owned security. BMMP was formed soon after the vicious police murder of George Floyd and in the wake of the nationwide Black Lives Matter protests of Summer 2020. BMMP is a group of faculty, students, staff, and community members who created a petition and got community and District support to replace the County Sheriff's on our campus with an unarmed restorative justice approach. Questions to be addressed: How does the presence of armed police on college campuses affect Black and Brown students? Do we need armed police on campuses? How can we create campus safety in a way that manifests respect for students and community, racial justice, and safety and comfort for all students and staff?
